Dr. Ebony Boulware, director of Duke Clinical & Translational Science Institute, joined the Different Kind of Leader podcast to talk about her journey from researcher to institutional leader, and to share her views on leadership as a whole.
In conversation with host Giselle Corbie-Smith, Boulware said her leadership motto is "just do you"—in other words, be true to yourself. This concept has helped her maintain stability in a career that she described as a "rocket ship ride."
Boulware also touched on her perspective as a woman of color in a leadership role. "Frequently I'm sitting at tables where nobody looks like me, and nobody has any insight into my experiences. I like being at the table to ask the right questions."
She said she is most proud of her work as a mentor to younger scientists, and of seeing the organizations she leads, including CTSI, grow and thrive.
"I am a dreamer. I have a vision for how things can be better, and I get really excited about that."
