Jessica Sperling, PhD, has joined CTSI as the Co-Director of the Evaluation and Strategic Planning team, serving alongside the Director, Dr. Joseph McClernon. As Co-Director, Dr. Sperling brings deep expertise and experience with evaluation to the CTSI, including a focus on efforts to advance equity and address inequalities. She will work with the team to conceptualize, assess, and maximize CTSI’s impact; to leverage evidence for continuous improvement; and to advance Duke CTSI as an innovator and leader in translational research and associated evaluation.
Dr. Sperling also serves as the Lead of the Applied Research, Evaluation, & Engagement area in Duke University’s Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and teaches at the undergraduate and graduate level on evaluation, applied research and empirical methodologies, and community research partnership. She is dedicated to informing and improving initiatives through responsive and collaborative research, evaluation, and research-practice partnership. Her work at Duke is focused on education and learning, healthcare delivery, equity and inequality, and innovation/pilot programming; this includes partnerships with entities based in Duke University, Duke Health, and community-based organizations.
Prior to joining SSRI, Dr. Sperling worked in research and evaluation in higher education, public, and non-profit sectors in New York City. She holds a BA in Anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis and a PhD in Sociology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
