Jillian Hurst, PhD
Jillian joined Duke in June 2017 as a research program manager in the department of Pediatrics and became part of the CTSI shortly afterwards. She works with Sallie Permar and Rasheed Gbadegesin to run the new Duke Pediatric Research Scholars training program for residents and fellows, and is also working with Sallie to launch the new Children’s Discovery Institute. As part of this position, she will be developing RFAs, coordinating investigators for large, institute-sponsored projects, and helping to identify and apply for funding for these projects.
Prior to joining Duke, Jillian spent five years as a staff science editor for the Journal of Clinical Investigation and helped to launch a new journal, JCI Insight, in 2016. As a science editor, Jillian managed commissioning and peer review of all review articles for JCI and adjudicated research manuscripts in all areas of biomedical research for JCI Insight, assisted in identification of scientific misconduct issues at both journals, and served as the primary writer for the monthly journal digest, JCI This Month.
Jillian holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences from the University of Georgia, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Mary Washington College, and was a postdoctoral research fellow in the department of Biochemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her primary scientific expertise is in the regulation of cellular signaling pathways and post-translational modifications. She has also served as an instructor for scientific communication classes at UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Georgia.
